In 1997 the Matthew fulfilled the purpose for which she was built by recreating John Cabot's voyage of discovery across the North Atlantic.

500 years to the day the Matthew was given a royal send off and cheered by 200,000 people as she progressed down the river Avon.

54 days and many adventures later the Matthew arrived in Bonavista, Newfoundland to be greeted by the Queen and Prince Philip.
